muffled

i can almost hear
voices muffled and distant
as though by pillows
laughter that's not mine
either in my head or elsewhere
not echoes at all
murky-water depths
releasing old memories
faded history
old smiles make me smile
appreciated more now
nostalgic, happy
little reminders
things that used to be closer
barely within reach
if i stretch for them
close my eyes and remember
time has no meaning
